Design Thinking - Part 2

Design mindsets can help you manage more innovative and effective outcomes with your teams. A lot of these ideas are not new, but sometimes we forget to take a step back and think about how we as managers can make the difference when challenges present themselves.

In my last post we looked at some great tips on what steps to take in design thinking, this time we will look at some of the attributes that support managing innovation in the design thinking process.

 

 

There are lots of tools out there to help you become a more effective manager and to develop great outcomes in your teams. Here are some great thoughts that might help your next challenge or project.

You will almost always get a more honest reaction from users if you show and don't tell. It's hard not to share what your own ideas are, but try it.

Understand the problems of the people. Probelms resonate with all of us, and getting a deeper understanding of the human factor will help uncover hidden truths.

Define what it is your going to solve. Sometimes its hard to see the wood through the trees but you will manage a better result from your team if the challenge is well understood (KISS).

 

The ideate phase is where your teams can go wild. It is important to try and limit 'can't do' at this stage, as sometimes the creative process can become a bit of a wildfire triggering one idea to another. Encourage your teams to approach from many different angles and have some fun too.

 

Sometimes too much of a good thing can be counter productive. While managing the ideate phase and encouraging your team to get creative, be aware that every team needs a leader who can keep an eye on the process. Time, costs and maintaining a productive environment should not be forgotten.

 

Keep you efforts focused on action. Letting the process get too theoretical can mean prototyping becomes hard. Focus on outcomes.

 

Diverse teams both geographically and demographically will also stimulate innovation. Sometimes its not always possible, but think about how you can create diversity when tackling problems and projects.
