Planning for success

“In order to guarantee success, you must have a successor.”

Sometimes we are so focused on our own goals, issues and careers, it is easy to overlook the importance of developing those around us.

Keeping in mind you probably won't be around forever, and that even the best of us won't achieve that promotion or new project unless we plan and develop others to move up alongside and behind us, thinking about a successor is critical.

I have seen some of the best performers fall into this trap, sometimes its just easier (and quicker) to do something yourself rather than involve others, other times it's a fear of letting go of responsibility and threat to perceived importance.

In all cases the outcome is the same, you become overloaded, outcomes are compromised and your best performers are often left feeling stifled and in need of challenges.

If you want to be successful, you need to plan for success with your team. Sure it takes a bit longer, and it takes time to get results, but in the long run you will win.

Ask yourself today, who is your successor and could they start tomorrow?
